These songs are not only beautiful but particularly significant given their backstory. The opportunity we have been given to produce them, 73 years after they were written, is testament to the power and promise of music, the hope it inspires and the dreams it keeps alive.
The songwriter, Doris Thurston Parker, will be eighty-nine this year. She wrote two of these songs when she was sixteen and the third when she had her first child.
Doris and her mother Elsie moved from Kentucky to California in 1939. Elsie took in work as a seamstress and Doris worked to save for an education in nursing. Her passion had always been music but, Doris’ dream of pursuing it as a career was a luxury she could not afford.
Doris wrote “It‘s Because Of You” and “Almost Everything” while waiting tables in a coffee shop. She wrote against the backdrop of World War II, influenced by the big band and swing music playing on the radio she loved to listen to.
Eight years later, Doris wrote “My Little Girl Is An Angel” seated at the piano, with her newborn daughter in her lap. She surrendered her childhood dreams but, she never stopped playing the piano.
Doris’ husband, Norm, approached us with these songs to see if we might have an interest in “bringing them to life.” We listened to the music and its story and we opted in without a moment’s hesitation.
This has been a labor of love for a gift of love. Now, Doris’ dream comes of age in the CD titled, “My Turn”.
